Bosco Tech Graduates Selected by Boeing Company to Serve as Internship Mentors

Three Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) graduating seniors have been selected to serve as mentors in the Boeing Company’s exciting Summer High School Internship program. The recent high school graduates, who completed Boeing internships last summer, will guide younger interns, including seven Tech students participating in the international defense and aerospace contractor’s seven-week STEM-focused educational program.

The internships provide high schoolers with invaluable experience working under engineers and computer scientists. Interns are selected to participate based on high academic standing, strong communication skills, and excellent problem-solving abilities. This year, because a virtual internship format will be employed due to COVID-19, the student mentors will provide additional support, sharing their experiences and helping introduce the interns to Boeing protocol and to engineers and computer scientists participating in the program.

“Boeing is providing an amazing opportunity for everyone involved,” said Bosco Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “The mentor students benefited tremendously as interns last year and now they will move into an advisory capacity to help younger students. Boeing’s program has provided a practical application of STEM coursework for the many Tech students who have been fortunate enough to have participated through the years.”
The Bosco Tech mentors are: Aaron De Castro, George Flores and Raphael Napiñas; they will work with cohorts of high school students from schools across Los Angeles County. The Boeing interns from Bosco Tech are: Nathan Chao, Kevyn Gonzales, Luciano Kholos, Owen Lin, Nathan Morales, Carson Waddell and Ryan Zettlemoyer.
                                               
“I’m serving as a mentor because I want to give back as much as I can to a program that gave me such an amazing experience,” said mentor Napiñas, who will begin his studies in Computer Science at Cal Poly, Pomona this fall. “This is a chance to pass on our knowledge of working at an actual engineering company to younger students, and also to reconnect with our former mentors, as well as make new connections with other employees.”
